Emily Halpern's paintings map her inner world and are a combination of abstract and representational images, featuring bold colors and symbols, expressing a full range of moods. Her process seeks to open the locked door of the unconscious through methods suggested by Surrealism. The darkly humorous overtones and polished surfaces have obscured narratives and leave gaps for viewers to fill in, as a springboard for their own imaginations.
Halpern received her formative training in art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she earned her BFA. She received her MFA degree from San Diego State University where her work received the Presidential Purchase Award, the Arts and Letters Deans Purchase Prize, the Liberty Station Fellowship and other accolades. Raised in Canada, she now lives and works in Los Angeles at the Brewery Artist Community. Emily’s paintings have been shown in Manhattan, the Hamptons, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Seattle and Vancouver.
